Volunteers

It was a day full of volunteers.

I found a volunteer currant bush growing underneath a pine tree.  I noticed the scarlet berries while watering the garden and sure enough based on the leaf shape: red currant!  I crawled inside the pine tree to harvest the currants (appreciating the lovely pine smell and trying to ignore the prickly needles while doing so).  I plan to transplant the entire bush to a more suitable location in the fall.

I also noticed a volunteer potato plant growing in our compost bin.  We might delay spreading the compost a bit to give it more time to grow.  We might actually get a compost potato harvest!

Last, but not least, we had some volunteer garlic pickers today.  Ian decided that it was time to harvest the garlic, so during Ali's morning nap, the boys and I got to work.

We got a good haul - a wheel barrow full.  Now to shake off the dirt and hang them on the covered porch to dry.

All that is left to do now is to find some volunteer honey harvesters.  Honey harvesting is a huge job and we could really use some help.  If you are interested in helping us extract the honey some time in the next few weeks, get in touch and we can pick a day that you are available to assist.  Kids are welcome as helpers - we already have a ton of them (or so it seems), what's a few more?!
