Happy Hallowe'en!

Hallowe'en is one of the boys' favourite events. They love Trick or Treating.

Unfortunately Alistair is still feeling under the weather with an ear infection. After sleeping most of Friday, he is still off school today and is sleeping away most of today in preparation for tonight's adventures (I am working to a soundtrack of snores - both Alistair's and Emily's - sigh). I hope Ali feels better tomorrow.

I took my Friday meetings like this.

Thyme for Turnips

The autumn harvest continues with herbs hung to dry and huge fall turnips.

We have lavender, thyme, sage, rosemary, and oregano.

This one is going into soup - Newfoundland style!

We also made time for a fall campfire so we could eat outside
and enjoy the unseasonably warm weather..
Hotdogs and marshmallows are always a favourite.

 

A Jam Packed Saturday

You know you are starting the weekend off right when Saturday's breakfast comes from a Berenstain Bears book! Honey blueberry French toast for this morning's win!

Next we were hard at work in the garden, planting garlic and digging leeks.

We finished up the day with some live music. Not bad for a Saturday in October.

 

Frost Tipped Everything

After a really hard frost this morning it was time to break out the hay for the animals. The sheep weren't complaining. They love hay!

 

Ossobuco

I know I am spoiled when we have a mid-week supper of venison ossobuco, with homemade mashed potatoes, and root vegetable gravy and I made absolutely none of it.

 

A Reason to Celebrate

I was offered a new job today. It is a good one with lots of opportunity for growth. I feel that I have turned lemons into lemonade and the future looks bright. If my dad were still here, he would be proud of me. I celebrated my accomplishment with a smoked meat sandwich in a place were I could feel his presence across the table.

It is almost here...the boys cannot wait until Halloween!

Double Yolkers

The chickens got into my autumn cabbage patch while I away in Regina and munched off the top halves of all my cabbages. Upon my return home, I admitted defeat and left the gate to the garden open for them to have at it. Within a day what was left of the cabbages was gone. What we may be lacking in coleslaw, we are making up for in eggs. We have been treated to several double yolkers as of late - a sure sign of well fed and happy chickens.

Repeat....but with Presenting

 After another day of looking, listening, networking, and presenting, my time in Regina is coming to a close. Back in the air tomorrow to return home. I wonder if my munchkins miss me yet?

Lost in Kansas?

Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore...but we are clearly somewhere very similar! Less than 12 hours after returning from grouse hunting, I am off on my next adventure. This trip, though, is for work. Can you guess where I am?

It is my first visit to Regina, Saskatchewan. I am here to chair a conference session and present my research findings at the Canadian Association of Gerontology's Annual Meeting. It is so flat here! I can see wheat fields forever.

One in the Hand is Worth Four in the Bush

On our last day of hunting, we saw four grouse but only managed to bring one home. I think they are getting smarter. You know what they say, "One in the hand is worth four in the bush!"

We did see lots of cool mushrooms on our travels though.

On our way home, we stopped at La Binerie outside of Maniwaki. We were impressed with the pallet of beans!

 It was such a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. A big "thank you" to Grandma for sitting the boys and for Erin for sitting the animals while we were away. Thank you!!

Five Grouse & Some Tamarack Trees

It was an absolutely beautiful day full of sunshine, puffy clouds, golden tamaracks, mushrooms, waterfalls, and, of course, grouse.

We came across a sweat lodge structure built of birch sticks and rope.
