From Pancakes to S’mores & Everything in Between

Saturdays do not get much more fun or much more exhausting!

Beginning

We started our day at the ungodly hour of 4 am for Ian, 5 am for Liam, Seamus and I and, unbelievably, 9:30 am for Alistair.

Ian headed out duck hunting very early this morning.  Early human gets the bird (while it is waiting for the worm to show up?).

Meanwhile, the rest of us decided to celebrate the weekend's arrival with a stack of whole wheat pancakes, thick maple syrup and a mound of fresh fruit.

Middle

We spent a few solid hours on a family hike up and down King Mountain in Gatineau Park.  It was a gorgeous day for a roam 'round the forest.  The leaves have not yet begun to change in earnest but we saw loads of cool mushrooms and enjoyed a few very excellent lookouts.

End

For supper we stoked our backyard campfire and feasted on roasted hot dogs and s’mores.

The kids were a bit disappointed to miss attending the Carp Fair today - we’ll be back next year once everyone is vaccinated - so we really splurged on tonight's treats.  In addition to using Jumbo Marshmallows (gasp!), Liam invented Caramel S’mores made with Caramilk bar squares and Caramilk-flavoured Chewy Chips Ahoy cookies.  Seamus’ creation was Minty S’mores made with Dairy Milk Mousse chocolate squares and chocolate dipped mint chocolate biscuits.  These souped-up s'mores were delectable treats, to be sure.

We also celebrated this beautiful autumn evening by sipping apple cider warmed with cinnamon sticks.  Sweet and definitely delicious.

It was a pretty fantastic day even though it didn’t involve Carp Fair corn dogs, bumper cars, cotton candy or crowds.  In fact, it might have actually been better than the Carp Fair - but I really, really love the Carp Fair so don't tell anyone that blasphemous thought ever crossed my mind.
