More Toutons!

The boys have spent the past few days learning all about Newfoundland thanks to their latest Canadian geography mail subscription box.

We coloured maps of Canada, learned how to use a compass rose, constructed glaciers and then made them scrape across our sandy cookie sheet landscape, and watched some awesome videos on icebergs breaking up, puffins hatching their egg, capelin rolling in on the ocean waves, and drilling a gas well in the Grand Banks.

We made our own icebergs by freezing water balloons and then compared their melting rates in salt vs fresh water.  We learned about density, Archimedes' principle and why a ship as big as the Titanic could float (and then, of course, why it sank).  And, most importantly (obviously), we made a batch of toutons and then slathered them in butter and molasses (as per the recipe's instructions) before promptly devouring them.

After all this, Seamus has decided he wants to move to Newfoundland and dreams of owning the largest Newfoundland dog ever.  Alistair just wants more toutons.  More toutons!  Don't we all, Alistair?  Don't we all.
