Birding & 'Bogganing

In honour of this year's Great Backyard Bird Count the boys and I went on a nature walk to see what we could see.  Not much in the ways of birds, honestly.  Alistair found a bunch of pine cones.  He then refused to move until he could collect all of them.

Liam found a bird's nest up really, really high.  Nests do not count, unfortunately.

Eventually we spotted one bird.  One is better than none, though.  We eagerly plugged the information about our sighting into the Merlin Bird ID app and it promptly suggested that we had spotted a Hairy Woodpecker.  Amazing.  That is exactly what it was!  This left us all wishing that we had spotted a few more birds so we could identify them too.  Maybe our birding will be more successful during tomorrow morning's family hike.

In contrast to our first attempt at birding, today's tobogganing excursion was a whopping success.  The boys and I did at least a half dozen runs each.  It was great fun flying down the hill even with really cold hands thanks to today's super freezing temperatures.  Trudging back up the hill each time was also really good exercise.

Anyone else get outside today? Tell us about it!
