A Treat...for the Compost

Seamus and I are still baking away in preparation for Christmas.  Yesterday we worked on date squares.  These are usually Ian's specialty.  From the look of the recipe, you can tell they get made every year.

This was my first time making date squares and I was a bit perplexed about why they would not brown on top...

Why so white?
...until we tasted them.  Blech!  Seems that I forgot to put the brown sugar into the crumble.  Needless to say, my first solo attempt at date squares went right into the compost bin.

Today, try #2.  This time we remembered the sugar and voila!  Perfectly golden brown.

Let's cut them up and get them in the freezer.
