We are slowly checking winter preparations off our list.
This week's bee feeding was sponsored by Ms. Kerry. She saw that sugar was on sale half price and knows that our bees eat 10 bags of sugar per week at this time of year, so she kindly picked up a cart full of sugar for us. The very hungry bees (and I) sure appreciate her thoughtfulness. Thank you!
This week's garlic planting was sponsored by our neighbour Alan. We saved a bunch of our garlic harvest, bought some more of a different variety, and we were still short! Luckily Alan had extra that he generously shared with us. Thank you!
We planted approximately 500 cloves of garlic (red russian, red german, and music varieties) and are excited for them to grow into 500 heads next summer!
Ian helped with the garlic sowing this year and was able to supervise the spacing and depth of planting. I am so thankful that I will not have to listen to him complain that the cloves are planted too shallow or close together (like he does every year even though they always turn out perfectly fine). For some unknown reason, Ian is crazy about garlic.
Still on our winter prep list is to pick up all the outdoor toys and tools before the first snow fall, to cover our strawberry patch with straw, and to "feed" our wine cap mushroom patch for next year. Our other wonderful neighbours, Nancy and Kim, have a surplus of wood chips and have offered us as much as we need to top our mushroom patch. Thank you!
We will then cover it with straw to give the mushrooms plenty of protection and decaying matter to breakdown in preparation for next year's growing season. Mushrooms are next weekend's job.
We still have lots to do before the snow flies but we are getting ready - winter is coming!
