Our second attempt at Montreal style bagels turned out possibly worse than the first. Seamus and I formed beautifully shaped dough rings and set them aside to rise. So far, so good. Unfortunately, we then got distracted by the vet's arrival for everyone's annual check up and vaccinations. When we got back inside after some sheep flipping and goat corralling, the bagels had risen way too much. The holes had disappeared completely and we were left with lumpy, weird bagel-bun hybrids.
Even though we would definitely not win any awards for presentation, our bagel-buns still tasted great. They proved themselves to be an effective vehicle for both smoked salmon with cream cheese for lunch and smokies with sauerkraut for supper.
As the saying goes, "Practice makes perfect", so I guess a third bagel baking attempt is in order. Preferably on a day with minimal farm animal-related distractions.
