Almost Halfway There

It is hard to believe that the apple blossoms are not even out yet and I already have half of my original kitchen garden and all of my box and pallet gardens planted.  We are on a roll!

Yesterday Liam and I planted our first set of tomatoes into the kitchen garden.  We did not harden these off first so they went under a plastic cover to help shield them from the elements.  They have perked up and are looking good today!

This afternoon Liam and I put in our second set of broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage as well as a hedge of kale.

All of our early spring planting is up and doing well.

Chinese cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower planted April 1st.
Red and green cabbage, kale, lettuce, radishes and scallions.
Green onions and rows of leaf lettuce.
Peas.
Radishes.
Green leaf lettuce.
Kale.
Red leaf lettuce.
Our perennials are also looking fantastic!

Sorrel.
Rhubarb.
Asparagus.
Raspberry canes.
Hop plants.
And last but not least, garlic.  Every year Ian swears that I plant it either too close together or too shallow or too deep.  And every year, without fail, it turns out just fine.

Our plan for tomorrow is to get the rest of the kitchen garden planted with more tomatoes, potatoes, and a few rows of onions, carrots, beets and turnips.  This is what we have left to work with:

This is not nearly enough space for everything we want to grow so we will also be confiscating the chickens' run for the growing season and turning it (and all their lovely composed chicken poop) into a second kitchen garden.  Tomorrow we plan to till it up in preparation for planting cucumbers, cantaloupe, squash, corn, beans, peas, more potatoes, carrots, turnips, onions, and beets - all in a week or so.

Not to worry, the chickens will still have ample room to free range; they will just have to share their space with Gloria Swinem and Ham Solo.
