Woodpecker Hunting

Grandpa and the boys spent the morning woodpecker "hunting".  Liam and Seamus found the bird's tap-tap-tap infinitely intriguing as it echoed repeatedly through an otherwise silent and icy forest.

The boys were willing volunteer "hunters" when Grandpa suggested that they trek through the snowy woods to try to see the noisy bird.

In our journey, we found a snow covered tree covered in mushrooms.

Climbed a small mountain.

And ended up right back where we started, freezing and exhausted, but with just enough energy left for dump trucks.  Go figure.

Much to our surprise, while playing trucks, the woodpecker found us!  He landed on a tree right next to us and gave us a perky tap-tap-tap.  While we were looking for him, he must have been keeping an eye on us.  It seems that he is a better "hunter" than we are.  We must need more practice.

Can you spot the woodpecker?  He is on the middle tree halfway up.
He has a white belly and black wings with white spots on them.
(He is admittedly easier to see when you can follow the tapping sound).
We finished our morning off with a mug of Grandma's hot chocolate. A clear favourite.

What an adventurous start to 2018.  Happy New Year from our family to yours!

  1. All of these adventures are exactly why you and Grandpa and Papa are able to get the boys out in -27 degree weather! Good work!
