Creating Space

I still didn’t manage to make it into the bee hives today but Alistair and I did keep busy inside. Since February our living room has been home to two floor to ceiling seedling grow stands. Today Ali and I sorted out all the pots and Pro Mix and dissembled one stand. Oh my gosh, the space we made!

We thought briefly about storing both stands away but instead decided a better idea would be to plant a bunch of seeds. We’re always sad in the fall to say goodbye to fresh homegrown greens, herbs, and scallions so we planted a much of these types of seeds today for a head start on our post-frost indoor greens “garden”.

Every fall we are also tempted to bring a cherry tomato plant (or pepper or herb plant) inside so it can keep producing. This is always a terrible idea since you can never get rid of the aphids you also bring in. Never. Ever. It doesn’t matter how much you cut back the plant or wash it, the aphids always find a way. And aphids are gross. So, in anticipation of this forthcoming urge we also started a few cherry tomato plants that we can grow indoors over the next few months - no risk of aphids and no need to be tempted to bring anything in from outside. Seems we thought of everything this year, huh? Though we do still have a grow stand taking up valuable real estate in our living room. <Shrug>.
