Day 14: Lynchburg, TN to Poplar Bluff, MO

We woke up in Lynchburg Municipal Campground this morning to an epic thunderstorm with a heavy downpour. We have never been so grateful for our warm and dry camper.

We are running low on groceries, so after a quick breakfast of the last of our yogurt and fruit, we headed across the river to visit the famous Jack Daniel Whiskey Distillery. We took a guided tour allowing us to see the inside of all the buildings including the fermentation tanks, whiskey stills, charcoal making and filtering processes, bottling line, and even the natural underground spring from which they draw all their water. Did you know Jack Daniel learned everything he knew about whiskey making from an enslaved man named Nathan “Nearest” Green? Also that Jack Daniel died from a complications from repeated leg amputations for gangrene from a wound in his toe that he broke kicking the safe in his office in frustration? What a way to go.

After the tour we sat down to a hearty and delicious southern inspired lunch at Miss Mary Bobo’s Restaurant. We tried southern fried chicken, meat loaf, fried okra, collard greens, corn bread, baked apples, coleslaw, pinto beans, and the most delicious potato casserole. Dessert was a slice of pecan pie with whiskey whipped cream. The whole meal was scrumptious.

Our meal was followed up by a delicious whiskey tasting back at the Distillery (for the adults only) and then we were westward bound!

Driving toward Memphis, we are headed to the Ozarks. We crossed the Mississippi River into Missouri and finally pulled over in Poplar Bluff for some grocery shopping at 10Box where everything is priced “at cost” and 10% added at checkout. Good night from Missouri!
