We had a great and tiring day! We woke early (there might have been a few grumbles about this) and were on the trail by 7:30am. We hiked a gradual up, up, up to Taggart Lake for beautiful views and delightful mountain reflections in the clear and calm lake. We were ahead of most of the other hikers so had the trail and lake mostly to ourselves.
Ian and the boys tried their hands at fishing but we didn’t see anything bigger than spotted minnows.
We then moved along to visit the next alpine lake, called Bradley Lake. We saw lots of wildlife on this stretch - mule deer with fawns and a yellow-bellied marmot who walked alongside us for a while but declined having his photo taken.

We then turned back for the return hike and were lucky enough to see a black bear cub from the trail. How exciting! It was far enough from the trail to be cool and not scary and we had lots of warning from fellow hikers. Our journey clocked in at a solid 14km and 2,000 calories burned. The hike was easy enough to be enjoyable but hard enough to make completing it feel like an accomplishment. On our way down, the boys were very impressed with how far and high they had hiked. It was a long adventure!
Apparently though, the boys wanted to keep the fun going. They were set on inflating their paddle boards so we headed to the beach at Colter Bay. Upon our arrival, we had inflated one board when the rain drops started to fall and the wind picked up blowing white caps across the lake. It was a tough pill to swallow that this afternoon was not suitable for paddling. Instead, we headed to the Park’s General Store where we paid twice the normal price for milk, bananas and cereal for tomorrow’s breakfast (prices were almost as steep as at the Northern in Paulatuk!). We then treated the boys to a huge plate of loaded nachos at the Signal Mountain Lodge as a reward for a day well done. There was absolutely no complaining on the hike and the boys were exceptional adventurers.

It will be an early night again tonight. The boys are exhausted and we have another early morning scheduled for tomorrow.
