Today was a low key, relaxing day. We started the day with a visit to Loon Mountain Resort. We rode the gondola to the summit to appreciate the beautiful autumn leaves. There were so many reds and oranges that the mountains looked like a rainbow of colours.
At the top of the mountain we explored the glacial caves. There was a wooden boardwalk through a granite boulder maze where we had to crouch, crawl and shimmy through ten marked passages. It was really fun and exceeded our expectations.
We visited the lookout tower before heading back down the gondola and into the town of Lincoln, NH. We drove through town, stopping at a few gift shops and thrift stores. We splurged on a few used books but avoided the tourist attraction that advertised live trained black bear shows. Who knew such a thing existed?! We stopped at an overlook on the way back to our cabin to take in more mountain views before it was time for lunch.
Lunch was an interesting experiment as we taste tested burgers made with Impossible Burger meat (substitute). We had listened to a podcast on how this product came to be and were interested in trying it out. Our verdict is that it wasn’t bad. It had a more spongy texture than beef and no noticeable beef taste. It tasted closer to a frozen steakette burger than a homemade beef burger. We’d eat them again but think a homemade beef burger tastes better. We do think cows are cute though and recognize the beef industry’s negative impact on the environment so would be willing to consider this as a reasonable and responsible substitute.
Our afternoon consisted of board games - we’re getting better at Clue - and reading our books. Dinner was homemade crab cakes with salad, followed by s’mores roasted over a campfire made by Alistair (fire maker extraordinaire).
