During our morning drive to Albuquerque, we passed right by Aztec. We decided to stop to stretch our legs at the Aztec Ruins National Monument. This was another Ancient Puebloan community dwelling (called a Great House) that was build around the same time as the cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde. They were also abandoned at the same time. The ruins were well preserved (or reconstructed, not sure which) but there was lots to see.
We completed the drive to Albuquerque and headed straight to lunch at Frontier near the University of New Mexico campus. This New Mexican cuisine was delicious, affordable, and absolutely filled up our very hungry tummies. We sampled green chili stew with warm, freshly made flour tortillas, beef burritos, green chili burgers, beef tacos and more! Yum!
Our afternoon was spent exploring the Old Town shops. There were many vendors set up along the streets and all the cool stores and galleries were open for us to browse.
We toured the San Felipe de Neri Church and lit a candle for our dearly departed loved ones.
Next was engaged in an informal tour of some of the filming sites from the TV show Breaking Bad which was filmed in Albuquerque. Only Ian has seen the show so the rest of us tagged alongside to see a chicken restaurant, car wash, and the house where pizza got thrown on the roof. The kids were very willing participants as they love getting snacks at fast food restaurants (they tried sopapillas for the first time today), they LOVE getting car washes, and they were fascinated to hear that crazy fans of Breaking Bad would throw real life pizzas on a real life house that belonged to an old lady trying to replicate what happened in the TV show (though they agreed that this would be really annoying, disrespectful and disgusting if it was our house).
After supper we were treated to an evening monsoon downpour. We watched the rain and the red setting sun from safely inside the trailer as we got ready for bed. Alistair had even more excitement this evening as he finally lost his front tooth! He wiggled that tooth all day long and it didn’t have a chance. He now has an absolutely enormous gap in the front to accompany his already very large gap from knocking out his first front tooth several years ago on the slide at daycare. He is ecstatic and is eagerly awaiting the American Tooth Fairy’s visit tonight. We are eagerly awaiting the growing in of his new front teeth.
We are overnighting at a Harvest Host parking lot of a local brewery and are headed to visit the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History tomorrow.
