Day 10: Indiana Dunes National Seashore IN: Hot, Hot Heat

It is CRAZY hot. Ridiculously hot. 36 degrees hot.

We spent a quiet morning reading in our shady campsite.

After lunch, we braved the heat and headed to the seashore. The parking lots of the first two beaches we tried were full but Ian managed to score us a parking spot at try #3 - Kemil beach. It was just past the 1933 Chicago World's Fair Century of Progress homes, which were neat to see.

We lathered on sunscreen and wore rash guards and hats to avoid roasting. The Lake Michigan waters were refreshing but not cold. There were plenty of waves to make swimming fun and lots of smooth pebbles to collect.

In our afternoon exploration, we found the Rios Mexican Grill where we sampled tacos with very spicy hot sauce, and met a lovely family that had been peach picking this morning who very generously shared part of their harvest with us after learning that peaches are Ali’s favourite. It was very, very kind of them to share with us.

We drove past the neighborhood’s working coal power plant (like something out of the Simpsons and literally directly behind people’s backyard fences). The enormous cooling stack gave off nuclear vibes for sure, including actively smoking.

We passed the old lighthouse museum.

Found some firewood and picked up some ice cold beers from Beer Church Brewing Co. in nearby Michigan.

It was our most chill day yet despite it being hotter than Hell (probably). I doubt Hell has peaches, beer, and tacos.

  1. Hotter than hay days here too with 3 more days coming in this heat wave! Seriously…maybe you should be heading north to Churchill, Manitoba to hang out with the polar bears! Sweaty hugs from Emily
