Our morning plan of devouring $6.60 breakfast specials at the nearby Twin Arrows Casino was foiled upon our arrival when we were informed that they were only serving the $20 per person buffet. We ate cereal sitting in camp chairs in the casino parking lot.
After grocery shopping, we drove to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. We stopped into the Visitors Centre and planned out our next two days.
After checking into Mather Campground, we did laundry and made supper.
We then headed for our first glimpse of the Grand Canyon at Mather Point. The boys, especially Liam, were awestruck. Liam said that it was the most incredible thing he has ever seen. How amazing is that?!
We finished the day by attending a ranger talk featuring an Indigenous naturopathic doctor, Jina Ethelbah, on Indigenous food sovereignty rooted in her cultural heritage as a member of the Apache tribe. The talk was powerful, offering a frank and honest look into Jina’s experiences with land, food, and medicine as a mixed Apache-White woman who sees the world mostly through an Indigenous lens. The talk resonated most with Liam, but the other two boys were extremely well behaved as they sat still, listened and stifled their yawns. At the end of the lecture, Alistair reflected upon leaving the theatre that he very much appreciated the kindness of the speaker in agreeing to come in so late so we had an opportunity to learn about the plants.
We have big plans for tomorrow to see much more of the Grand Canyon. Time to catch some zzzzs.

The boys look less than enthused by the change in breakfast plans.
