Day 1: Burlington, ON to Dearborn, MI

Following a delicious breakfast and heartfelt send-off from Grandma Cora, we got a drive-by goodbye from Uncle Brian and family. They also supplied us with a replacement travel mug since we forgot Ian’s coffee on the kitchen counter. #lostcup

After driving through Leamington (producer of 50% of the country’s tomatoes and rightfully the Tomato Capital of Canada), we visited Point Pelee National Park - the southern most point of mainland Canada. This adventure has a very Zelda feel, with hiking out on a sand bar to the tip and climbing up a very high lookout tower. We kept waiting for the Lizalfos to appear to fight us!

The marsh hike was one of the best parts of Point Pelee, particularly the mama swan sitting on her huge nest of eggs. Did you know that Canada has 25% of the world’s wetlands? We are climate change champions!

After an uneventful bridge and border crossing, our afternoon was spent at Dearborn’s Arab American National Museum. We learned that Arab Americans were among the first homesteaders in the 1880s but that anti-Arab immigration policies slowed down immigration until the mid-1900s. Did you know that Dearborn had the first mosque in the USA and boasts the largest concentration of Arab citizens in the country?

After getting booted from the Walmart parking lot, we are overnighting in a Park and Ride. Everyone is super tired but overall, it was a very successful first day.
