Interestingly, the kids prefer to nurse off of one udder more than the other. This has left her left udder engorged. I milked it out twice for her in hopes of making her more comfortable, preventing mastitis, and trying to reduce the difference between the udders so the kids nurse off of them more equally. It is also good to have a bottle of milk in the fridge just in case Martha's babies need it (if they ever get here, that is).
Milking goats makes me happy. The repetition is soothing for the soul and seeing the bowl filling up with lovely creamy goodness is so satisfying. I am looking forward to milking duty being a daily thing. I have to do some research to figure out how to keep the milk as clean as possible during the milking process (the goat does sometimes step into or almost into the bowl). I also need to figure out pasteurisation at home and how to separate the cream so when it is time to start milking for us humans, we are prepared and knowledgeable.
If you are in the area and interested in making a trip out here to Gael Glen Farm to cuddle baby goats, we are happy to have visitors. Goat socialization is high on our agenda and seriously how can you resist - they are so cute and tiny! Send us a line and we will arrange a time in the coming days or on the weekend.
